  • Description

Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant has been a D.C. staple for years and has earned multiple awards as the best Ethiopian food in the nation’s capital. Once diners enter Dukem from the busy streets of Washington, they are completely transported to the African continent. Aromatic incense burns and authentic decorations from Africa adorn the walls. On a small stage in the corner, groups of musicians play traditional music on drums and other native instruments. The food at Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant is eaten by hand, the traditional Ethiopian way. Diners take pieces of injera, which is a slightly sour version of an African crepe that doubles as a plate, and dip it in various stews with meats. One of the most popular dishes is kitfo, beef tartare that is rolled with cottage cheese, red pepper and herbed butter.
